To the Graefe family,

I was deeply disappointed to see in my mail today that Bill Graefe had passed away, and the memorial service had already passed.  I would have loved to have been there.  I have fond memories of my years in scouting, and I am convinced that whatever leadership skills I have today are thanks to him, and my experiences in Troop 160. My two fondest memories- (1) As a shy 11-year old at my first Troop meeting, he called me up to introduce me, and asked if I wanted to be called “Jack” or “John”.  I shrugged my shoulders, too embarrassed to answer, so he said, “then we’ll call you Jack-John”.  The name stuck with me for many years. (2) The trips to Wilkes Barre to help with flood relief- my first real introduction to what it means to help others. He had a tremendous impact on our world, and will be greatly missed.
